Question by Lisa B: Are Japanese coming to Hawaii or not coming?
In reading the answers in travel/Honolulu, I have seen two claims. One is that as a result of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear power plant issues in Japan, lots of Japanese are coming to Hawaii to avoid the problems in Japan. I have also seen people say that Japanese tourism is way down for the same reason. These could both be true, of course, in that tourists with no previous connection to Hawaii are not coming due to personal or economic stress back home, but people with second homes, time shares, or just the money to get out of the way of trouble are coming to escape turbulence in Japan. I would be interested in getting any details anyone knows. No reason other than a general interest and frequent travel to Hawaii.
Please do not give me any information about the Japan situation — I know lots about it. I am interested in temporary (maybe long-term temporary) moves to Hawaii by Japanese as a result, and loss of ordinary Japanese tourism.

As always, most Japanese will be coming as tourists and a few will move there. There won’t be any mass exodus or anything like that.
